Advances in Clinical Radiology

      I was honored that John Vassallo, Publisher of Radiologic Clinics of North America, asked me to be the editor of this new annual publication from Elsevier called Advances in Clinical Radiology. This series will join Elsevier’s increasing library of Advances series in other fields, including Anesthesia, Pediatrics, Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, and Ophthalmology and Optometry. Currently, I am also editor of Radiologic Clinics of North America, which publishes 6 issues per year, each devoted to a major topic in radiology. There has been a void in the field of radiology that we wanted to fill. John and I realized that although coverage in Radiologic Clinics of North America is broad, most major topics can only be covered every few years at most; therefore, readers may miss important clinical information because of our long-established editorial schedule. With Advances in Clinical Radiology, we will publish once a year, and each article will review a pertinent, current, clinical question relevant to a major radiologic topic. We hope that our target audience of inquisitive radiologists, fellows, and residents finds these review articles educational, instructive, and insightful.
      Radiology has always been at the forefront of new technologic advances in medicine. Its critical role is seen in all aspects of medicine. While it is impossible to include many of the advances in radiology, we have highlighted some of them. Technologic advances eloquently discussed include dual-energy CT (Khandelwal, Mileto, Leng, Fletcher), digital mammography (Conlon, Lester, Friedewald), advanced cardiac (Karur, Hanneman) and 4D flow vascular MR techniques (Allen, Burris, Lombardi, Francois), and functional liver imaging (Olson, Reeder, Venkatesh). Newer developments, including radiogenomics (Chiang, Jamshidi) and deep learning (Liu, Kijowski), are also brilliantly discussed. Applications of imaging techniques are reviewed in assessment of lung cancer screening (Carter) and quantitative evaluation of lung nodules (Alpert), assessment of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (Aung, Williamson, Singh), fetal neuroimaging (Huisman), neuroendocrine imaging (Burns, Hsu, Shifteh, Erdfarb), imaging of the elite athlete (Deshmukh), imaging neuromas (Abboud, Kakarala, Garg, Grant, Kliot, Omar), and vessel wall imaging (Abdalla, Cantrell, Vali, Hurley, Shaibani, Carroll, Ansari).
      Radiology has developed and popularized minimally invasive techniques for liver tumor treatment (Toskich, Bailey, Alzubaidi, Devcic, Frey, Lewis, Moynagh, Mody, Ritchie, Sio, Patel, Paz-Fumagalli), embolization (Bagla, Piechowiak, Isaacson), vertebral augmentation (Carter, Maingard, Chandra, Asadi, Hirsch), and interventional oncology in the era of immunotherapy (Chiarello, Hickey) and endovascular management of lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis (Desai, Grewal, Shah, Vedantham). It obviously is difficult to include the numerous advances in our specialty, but our hope is that this series will be an important resource to highlight many of them.
      I want to especially thank Kristen Helm, the Developmental Editor from Elsevier, and her colleagues, as well as my coeditors, Drs Amichai Erdfarb, Ankur Garg, Jeffrey Kanne, and Robert Lewandowski, for their exceptional assistance in the planning of the issue, invitation of esteemed authors, and review of the articles. I want to especially thank the authors of these outstanding state-of-the-art review articles. Finally, I would like to thank my wife, Michelle Naidich, and sons, Scott and Mark, for their loving support.
